PM Modi Witnesses Thai Adaptation Of Ramayana; Highlights Cultural Ties

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a performance of ‘Ramakien’, the Thai adaptation of the Ramayana, during his visit to Thailand.

A group of students from Thailand’s Bunditpatanasilpa Institute, led by Ekkalak Nu-ngoen, presented the epic through a blend of Bharatanatyam from India and Khon, a traditional Thai dance form.

The Ramayana holds deep significance in both India and Thailand, with shared themes of sacrifice, duty, and the triumph of good over evil.

While the Indian epic tells the story of Lord Rama, the Thai adaptation refers to him as Phra Ram, underscoring the nations’ cultural connections.

Welcoming PM Modi, Thailand’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lalivan Karnchanachari, told ANI, “Today, we welcome PM Modi to our beautiful country as he is here to attend the BIMSTEC meeting. We saw a mixture of Indian and Thai cultures during the performance. The PM will have a great time here.”

One of the performers expressed excitement about the opportunity, stating, “Today, we are very happy that we present Ramayana and Ramakien and the combination of both Thai Classical and Bharatnatyam in front of the PM and other distinguished guests.”

Earlier in the day, PM Modi witnessed a Garba performance upon arriving at his hotel in Bangkok.

Members of the Indian diaspora warmly welcomed the Prime Minister, greeting him with enthusiasm.

PM Modi, looking forward to his engagements at the BIMSTEC Leaders’ Summit, was received at the airport by Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Suriya Jungrungreangkit.

He shared images from his arrival, interacting with the Indian community and acknowledging their support.
