PM Modi Visits Historic Colosseum In Rome With Giorgia Meloni

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the historic Colosseum in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during his visit to Italy.

The Colosseum, located in central Rome, is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built. Completed in 80 AD under the Flavian dynasty, it once held up to 80,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests and public events.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warmly welcomed PM Modi to Italy upon his arrival in Rome on Tuesday night (local time). She extended a personal greeting on the social media platform X, saying, “Welcome to Rome, my friend!”, highlighting the strong rapport between the two leaders.

Earlier, PM Modi also attended a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Meloni and shared pictures from the meeting on X. He said he looked forward to further discussions aimed at strengthening India-Italy friendship and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

In a post on X, PM Modi said that after arriving in Rome, he met Prime Minister Meloni over dinner and later visited the Colosseum. He noted that they exchanged views on a wide range of issues and expressed optimism about continued dialogue to deepen bilateral relations.

PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Meloni and meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella during the visit. They will meet at Villa Doria Pamphili and are likely to adopt a joint declaration to strengthen the India-Italy strategic partnership.

The MEA said the visit reflects growing momentum under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, which expands cooperation in trade, investment, defence, clean energy, innovation, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges.

The MEA also highlighted that the visit will further strengthen India’s engagement with Europe, particularly in light of the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
