PM Modi To Attend BRICS Summit In Russia; Bilateral Meetings Planned

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia from October 22-23 to attend the 16th BRICS Summit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced Friday. Modi’s visit, his second to Russia this year, comes at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

BRICS Summit Focuses on Global Development and Security

The summit, held in Kazan, is the first since BRICS expanded its membership to include Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the UAE. Argentina and Saudi Arabia were also invited, but Argentina declined after a government change, and Saudi Arabia has yet to respond. The summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” will provide a platform for key discussions on global issues.

Bilateral Talks Planned with BRICS and Invited Leaders

Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with leaders of BRICS nations and other invited countries. According to Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov, the event will host leaders from 24 countries, making it the largest foreign policy event in Russia. The BRICS+ meetings will include representatives from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Top leaders, including seven Presidents and two Prime Ministers, will be in attendance, along with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and other global figures.
