PM Modi Thanks Indian Diaspora In Cyprus; Pledges To Deepen Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Cyprus on Sunday as part of his three-nation diplomatic tour, receiving a heartfelt reception from the Indian diaspora in Limassol.

Citizens greeted him with bouquets, chants, and patriotic slogans as he arrived at his hotel, reflecting the deep emotional bond between overseas Indians and the homeland.

Prime Minister Modi interacted warmly with the community, acknowledging their support and reaffirming the government’s dedication to them.

PM Modi makes historic visit

This visit marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has travelled to Cyprus in 23 years, underscoring the importance India places on strengthening its presence in the Mediterranean region.

PM Modi is accompanied by a high-level delegation of around 100 officials, highlighting the significance of the trip.

The Prime Minister’s arrival was marked by a ceremonial welcome at Larnaca International Airport, with President Nikos Christodoulides and Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos receiving him in person.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote: “Landed in Cyprus. My gratitude to the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport. This visit will add significant momentum to India-Cyprus relations, especially in areas like trade, investment and more.”

The Prime Minister also reiterated India’s goal of working closely with Cyprus to explore untapped areas of cooperation.

PM Modi also held bilateral talks with President Christodoulides, with discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, IT, defence, renewable energy, and shipping.

Both leaders will exchange views on regional issues, including maritime security and West Asian affairs.

Cyprus’s strategic position as the European Union’s southeastern frontier makes it a key partner in India’s outreach to Europe.

Cyprus will assume the rotating presidency of the EU in early 2026, opening fresh opportunities for India-EU collaboration.

A bond rooted in history

India and Cyprus established diplomatic relations in 1962, and ties have remained friendly and cooperative.

Cyprus has consistently supported India’s position on international matters, including Kashmir.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit builds on this history, with a renewed emphasis on economic and cultural exchange.

Following his visit to Cyprus, PM Modi is scheduled to attend the G7 Summit in Canada, before concluding his tour in Croatia.

His European engagements reflect India’s broader strategy to cultivate strategic partnerships and enhance global cooperation.

As he addressed the diaspora and diplomatic leaders in Cyprus, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed, “India will continue to work to deepen its ties with Cyprus, a true friend and a key partner in the Mediterranean region.”
