PM Modi Receives Warm Welcome In Mauritius With Traditional Geet Gawai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted with the vibrant tunes of Geet Gawai, a traditional Bhojpuri musical performance, upon his arrival in Mauritius on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister actively engaged in the celebration, clapping along with the performers.

Geet Gawai, a cultural tradition brought to Mauritius by women from India’s Bhojpuri region, holds significant historical value.

It was recognized by UNESCO in 2016 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

As PM Modi arrived at his hotel in Port Louis, members of the Indian diaspora enthusiastically welcomed him with chants of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and waved mini tricolours.

Expressing their excitement, Divya, a diaspora member, shared, “I met PM modi and got the opportunity to shake hands with him. I am very happy that we are able to participate in such an event.”

Another attendee, Saraswati, remarked, “It feels really great coming here and meeting our Prime Minister. The relations between India and Mauritius are great, and we hope it keeps growing.”

Preeti, another Indian diaspora member, shared, “I met PM Modi and shook hands with him. It feels great to get the opportunity to speak to him.”

Taking to X, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted, “Namaste Mauritius! PM @narendramodi arrives in Mauritius to a warm and enthusiastic welcome! In a special gesture, warmly received by PM @Ramgoolam_Dr at the airport.”

During his visit, PM Modi will meet Mauritius President Dharam Gokhool and PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam. In the evening, he will address a community event.

“Landed in Mauritius. I am grateful to my friend, PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport. This visit is a wonderful opportunity to engage with a valued friend and explore new avenues for collaboration in various sectors. Today, I will be meeting President Dharam Gokhool, PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam and addressing a community programme in the evening,” the Prime Minister further posted on X.

Over the next two days, the Prime Minister will however engage in discussions with the Mauritian leadership. He will also participate in multiple events, including serving as the Chief Guest at Mauritius’ 57th National Day celebrations.
