Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome at Government House in Auckland as he commenced the final leg of his three-nation tour, marking a significant moment in India-New Zealand relations.
The reception featured a traditional Māori pōwhiri, an indigenous ceremonial welcome that reflects New Zealand’s rich cultural heritage and values, underscoring the growing warmth between the two nations.
The visit further holds particular importance as it marks the first official trip by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in four decades.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon personally welcomed Prime Minister Modi on his arrival in Auckland, highlighting the importance of the visit.
Soon after arriving, Prime Minister Modi interacted with members of the Indian community, who greeted him with vibrant cultural performances celebrating India’s diverse traditions.
The event showcased dances and music representing Punjab and Tamil Nadu, along with a fusion of Carnatic and Hindustani classical music and a rendition of Vande Mataram, reflecting the deep cultural roots maintained by the Indian diaspora in New Zealand.
Sharing his experience, PM Modi expressed delight at witnessing the cultural showcase, praising the diaspora for preserving India’s heritage across generations and continents. He emphasised that such efforts continue to strengthen enduring people-to-people connections between India and New Zealand.
Prime Minister Modi praised the Naad Vocal Ensemble, saying its performance reflected the warmth of India-New Zealand ties. His Auckland visit will focus on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, education and defence while strengthening cultural and community links.
