Ethiopia conferred its highest civilian decoration on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his maiden bilateral visit, highlighting the strengthening partnership between New Delhi and Addis Ababa.
The Ethiopian government awarded PM Modi the Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia at a special ceremony held at the Addis International Convention Centre.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed presented the award in recognition of PM Modi’s role in strengthening bilateral ties. He also acknowledged PM Modi’s stature as a global leader advocating cooperation among developing nations.
Officials described the honour as a reflection of Ethiopia’s appreciation for India’s consistent engagement. They also noted India’s support across development, education, and capacity-building sectors.
PM Modi said he felt privileged to receive recognition from one of the world’s oldest civilisations as he accepted the award. He expressed heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the people of Ethiopia for the gesture, calling it a symbol of enduring friendship between the two countries.
The Prime Minister also praised Abiy Ahmed’s leadership, particularly his focus on national cohesion, sustainable growth and inclusive development.
PM Modi highlighted the longstanding contributions of Indian educators to Ethiopia. He noted that Indian teachers have played a significant role in the country’s progress for over a century.
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of knowledge sharing in nation-building and development partnerships.
PM Modi dedicated the honour to past and present generations of Indians and Ethiopians who have nurtured bilateral relations. He conveyed gratitude on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians.
The Prime Minister said the conferment marked a new chapter in India–Ethiopia relations. He added that it reinforced the positive agenda of the Global South.
The ceremony also reflected expanding strategic, cultural and developmental cooperation between the two nations.
PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s development priorities, signalling continued collaboration in the years ahead.
