PM Modi Reaffirms Support For Ukraine Peace In Meeting With Putin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday discussed key regional and global issues of mutual interest, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region that have affected maritime trade and the safety and security of Indian seafarers, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Kyrgyzstan’s capital. It was their first meeting this year after they met in New Delhi for the 23rd Annual Summit in December last year.

The leaders reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across political, economic, defence, energy, space, mobility and people-to-people ties. They welcomed the outcomes of the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic and Cultural matters, held in Moscow on August 24.

PM Modi and President Putin exchanged views on India-Russia engagement in multilateral forums, particularly BRICS under India’s 2026 Chairship.

The MEA said the two leaders shared perspectives on conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region and their impact on maritime trade and Indian seafarers.

PM Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy remained the way forward for resolving conflicts.

India’s Position on Ukraine

PM Modi reaffirmed India’s support for all efforts aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine and stressed the need to move from an endless war towards an end to the war for the well-being of humanity. He said India’s message remained that all issues should be resolved peacefully and at the earliest, invoking the shared message of peace associated with Mahatma Gandhi and Gautama Buddha.

The two leaders agreed to remain engaged to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia, which the MEA said continues to grow and has shown resilience amid geopolitical uncertainties.

PM Modi said he looked forward to welcoming Putin to India for the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13, 2026.

After their meeting, PM Modi and President Vladimir Putin travelled together in the same car to the opening ceremony of the World Nomad Games at Bishkek Arena. They had displayed similar camaraderie at the SCO Leaders’ Summit in Tianjin last September.
