Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski said on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi persuaded Russian President Vladimir Putin not to use nuclear tactical weapons during the Russia-Ukraine war.
He expressed Poland’s gratitude for India’s involvement in the conflict.
“We had a great visit of PM Modi to Warsaw. PM Modi did persuade Putin not to use nuclear tactical weapons. We want permanent peace in Ukraine,” Bartoszewski told CNN-News18 in an exclusive interview.
Bartoszewski’s statement follows PM Modi’s remarks in a podcast with Lex Fridman.
PM Modi stressed that peace can only be achieved through negotiations, not warfare.
“I have a close relationship with Russia and Ukraine. I can sit with President Putin and say that this is not the time for war. I can also tell President Zelenskyy that a resolution will only come when both sides sit at the negotiating table,” PM Modi noted.
The Prime Minister added that while Ukraine may engage in discussions with its allies, true resolution requires both parties to participate.
Additionally, PM Modi noted that the current situation offers an opportunity for meaningful talks between Russia and Ukraine.
PM Modi clarified his stance on the war, stating that he supports peace, not neutrality.
“I have always maintained that I stand with peace. I am not neutral,” the Prime Minister asserted.
PM Modi also highlighted the weakening influence of international organizations like the United Nations.
“Institutions that were once powerful have become almost irrelevant. No real reforms are happening,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked.
Bartoszewski confirmed that Poland has supported Ukraine since the beginning of the war.
“We have thousands of Ukrainian migrants in Poland. We are ready to provide peacekeeping and military support,” he further added.
