Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as both leaders arrived for the India-Australia CEO Forum in Melbourne.
Albanese welcomed PM Modi, and the two leaders posed for photographs before the event.
PM Modi is scheduled to address leading business executives from both countries.
The India-Australia CEO Forum, established in 2012 and relaunched by both leaders in 2023, meets annually to recommend measures that strengthen economic growth and commercial cooperation. Throughout the year, it also hosts engagements that deepen bilateral business relations.
Earlier on Wednesday, PM Modi received a grand welcome from the Indian community after arriving in Melbourne from Indonesia.
Despite the cold weather, members of the Indian diaspora gathered in large numbers outside his hotel. They chanted patriotic slogans and presented vibrant cultural performances.
In his X statement, PM Modi described the community’s warm reception as ‘truly unforgettable’. He thanked the diaspora for its enduring affection and unwavering bond with India.
PM Modi praised the Australian-India Orchestra’s performance of ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’, saying music continues to strengthen ties between the two nations. He noted that the performance also highlighted the global popularity of ‘Vande Mataram’ during its 150th anniversary year.
The Prime Minister also praised a unique performance featuring Australia’s ancient Didgeridoo and India’s Tabla. He commended Ron Murray and Dr Sam Evans for preserving their rich musical traditions.
PM Modi further appreciated an impressive Kathak performance and welcomed the growing popularity of Indian classical dance across Australia.
After landing in Melbourne, PM Modi said his visit would add fresh momentum to the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He said he looked forward to bilateral talks with Prime Minister Albanese and interactions with the Indian diaspora, an important pillar of bilateral ties.
PM Modi will co-chair the third Annual Leaders’ Summit with Anthony Albanese. He will meet Governor-General Sam Mostyn and engage with stakeholders from multiple sectors.
Anthony Albanese described India as Australia’s fourth-largest and fastest-growing economic partner ahead of the summit. He said the partnership remains vital for peace, stability and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific.
