During his Mauritius visit for National Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented culturally significant gifts to President Dharambeer Gokhool and First Lady Brinda Gokhool, including Makhana, a nutrient-rich superfood from Bihar, as a tribute to India’s agricultural tradition.
This comes in the backdrop of India’s recent 2025 Budget announcement to establish a dedicated Makhana Board in Bihar, aimed at improving production, processing, and marketing by supporting farmers through organised initiatives.
For the First Lady, PM Modi presented an elegant Banarasi saree, a hallmark of Varanasi’s textile craftsmanship, renowned for its luxurious silk, intricate brocades, and rich zari embroidery.
Another significant gift was a brass and copper pot filled with sacred water from the Sangam in Prayagraj, collected during the ongoing Maha Kumbh.
This gesture symbolized the spiritual and historical ties between India and Mauritius.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi attended the Mauritius National Day celebrations as the Chief Guest, reaffirming the strong diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
During a special lunch hosted by President Gokhool, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the warm hospitality and described the gathering as a testament to the enduring friendship between India and Mauritius.
Enhancing the cultural exchange, a traditional ‘Geet-Gawai’ performance welcomed PM Modi, showcasing a Bhojpuri musical tradition brought to Mauritius by Indian migrants.
“Memorable welcome in Mauritius. One of the highlights was the deep rooted cultural connect, seen in the Geet-Gawai performance. It’s commendable how the great Bhojpuri language thrives in the culture of Mauritius,” the Prime Minister posted on X.
