Prime Minister Narendra Modi was warmly welcomed by Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu with a heartfelt hug upon his arrival at the Velana International Airport in Malé on Friday.
PM Modi’s arrival marks the beginning of a two-day state visit to the Maldives, where he will participate as the Guest of Honour at the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations.
In a post shared on X, the Prime Minister said, “Landed in Malé. Deeply touched by the gesture of President Muizzu to come to the airport to welcome me. I am confident that India-Maldives friendship will scale new heights of progress in the times to come.”
This is PM Modi’s third visit to the Maldives and the first by any head of state or government since President Muizzu assumed office.
Chants of ‘Vande Mataram’ filled the air as top Maldivian officials – including the Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, Finance Minister, and Minister of Homeland Security – welcomed Prime Minister Modi at the airport.
The visit underscores India’s long-standing commitment to fostering close ties with its maritime neighbour.
PM Modi’s presence at the Independence Day celebrations symbolises India’s support for the Maldives’ national progress and regional stability.
The leaders will actively review the progress of the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, adopted during President Muizzu’s state visit to India in October 2024.
The framework focuses on bolstering regional cooperation, economic development, and security collaboration in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the significance of this visit in a recent briefing, noting, “The relationship with the Maldives is comprehensive and multifaceted. This visit will further consolidate strong bilateral ties and enhance peace, prosperity and security in the region.”
India has remained a consistent partner to the Maldives in times of need, offering support during crises, natural and man-made.
The diplomatic relationship continues to thrive with frequent high-level exchanges, including multiple ministerial visits and parliamentary interactions in 2025 alone.
PM Modi’s visit signifies a renewed chapter in India-Maldives relations, promising deeper cooperation and shared prosperity across the Indian Ocean.
