PM Modi & President Muizzu Sign Key Agreements; Deepens India-Maldives Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Male on President Mohamed Muizzu’s invitation marked a significant step in reinforcing India-Maldives relations.

Both leaders signed multiple memoranda of understanding covering trade, infrastructure, fisheries, meteorology, and digital cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, taking to the social media platform X, said, “An indication of how strong, deep-rooted and extensive the India-Maldives friendship is!”

Among the highlights was a Line of Credit worth ₹4,850 crore for infrastructure projects in the Maldives.

Agreements were also signed to restructure Maldivian debt obligations, advance the India-Maldives Free Trade Agreement, and recognise Indian Pharmacopoeia standards.

India and the Maldives concluded an MoU to share India’s population-scale digital solutions and a network-to-network UPI agreement between NPCI International and the Maldives Monetary Authority.

Major Projects & Initiatives

PM Modi and President Muizzu jointly inaugurated several projects, including 3,300 social housing units in Hulhumale, a road and drainage network in Addu City, and six High Impact Community Development Projects.

India also handed over 72 vehicles, essential equipment, and two BHISHM Health Cube sets.

The leaders jointly released commemorative stamps celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations, symbolising the enduring partnership between the two countries.

PM Modi emphasised accelerating economic ties through a proposed Bilateral Investment Treaty and ongoing Free Trade Agreement discussions.

A new local currency settlement system enabling trade in Rupees and Rufiyaa, along with the rapid expansion of UPI in the Maldives, is expected to boost commerce and tourism.

Digital transformation was another focus, with agreements on technology sharing and digital governance highlighting India’s role in supporting the Maldives’ development journey.

The inauguration of the Ministry of Defence building in Male served as a symbol of deepening defence cooperation. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to regional maritime security under the Colombo Security Conclave and enhancing the Maldives’ defence capabilities to ensure peace and stability in the Indian Ocean.

Climate change featured prominently in discussions, with both sides agreeing to enhance collaboration on renewable energy. PM Modi reiterated India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ and MAHASAGAR policies, highlighting India’s role as the Maldives’ most trusted partner.

The visit also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence, with PM Modi thanking President Muizzu for the honour of being the Guest of Honour.

Together, the agreements and projects unveiled mark a new chapter in India-Maldives relations, promising strengthened economic links, improved connectivity, and long-term regional stability.
