PM Modi, Cyprus President Lead CEO Roundtable To Strengthen Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Cyprus on Sunday, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the island nation in over two decades.

He was received with ceremonial honours at Larnaca International Airport by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides.

Observers regard the visit as a diplomatic milestone that revitalises the Indo-Cypriot relationship.

High-level business roundtable in Limassol

In Limassol, both leaders addressed a joint business roundtable, interacting with CEOs and senior executives from Indian and Cypriot companies.

Discussions focused on key sectors such as innovation, energy, technology, logistics, fintech, defence, AI, and shipping.

“Boosting business linkages! President Nikos Christodoulides and I interacted with leading CEOs in order to add vigour to commercial linkages between India and Cyprus. Sectors like innovation, energy, technology and more offer immense potential. I also talked about India’s reform trajectory in the last decade,” PM Modi posted on X.

The Prime Minister also outlined India’s reform-led economic growth over the last decade.

President Christodoulides emphasised that Cyprus and India are ‘entering a new era of strategic partnership founded on trust and shared values’.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the roundtable aimed to deepen investment and technology partnerships.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that leaders called for greater cooperation in startups, financial services, and connectivity, enhancing the economic trajectory of both nations.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who arrived ahead of the PM, met Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos and reinforced the importance of PM Modi’s visit in boosting India’s presence in the EU region.

A warm diaspora welcome

PM Modi’s visit struck an emotional chord with the Indian diaspora in Cyprus.

Crowds greeted him with chants of ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’.

A supporter prominently displayed a placard reading ‘Jai Hind, Operation Sindoor, Justice is Served’, referencing India’s recent anti-terror operation.

Cyprus, a strategic EU member state, reaffirmed its commitment to support India on international platforms.

It has also opened a Eurobank representative office in Mumbai, aiming to become a financial conduit between Europe and South Asia.

President Christodoulides hailed the visit as the start of ‘a partnership that knows no limits’, reiterating Cyprus’s alignment with India on key global issues, including counterterrorism and multilateral cooperation.

During his two-day visit, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with President Christodoulides and receive the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, Cyprus’s highest civilian honour.

He will then proceed to Canada for the G7 Summit, underscoring India’s growing strategic footprint across regions.

PM Modi’s Cyprus visit comes at a time when the Mediterranean nation is preparing to assume the EU Council Presidency in 2026.

It reinforces India’s diplomatic outreach, aligns with the nation’s vision of becoming a global economic player, and strengthens a long-standing friendship anchored in democratic values and mutual respect.
