PM Modi Congratulates Sheikh Hasina On Fourth Consecutive Victory, Mentions India- Bangladesh Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina on her fourth consecutive victory in the parliamentary election.

“Spoke to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and congratulated her on her victory for a historic fourth consecutive term in the Parliamentary elections. I also congratulate the people of Bangladesh for the successful conduct of the elections. We are committed to further strengthening our enduring and people-centric partnership with Bangladesh,” the prime minister posted on social platform X.

Hasina’s Awami League won almost 75% of the seats in Sunday’s general election was boycotted by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and drew a low turnout.
Former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia’s BNP had participated in the 2018 general elections, boycotted the polls after Sheikh Hasina refused its demands to resign and allow a neutral observer to oversee the election.

“Each political party has the right to make decisions, the absence of one party in the election does not mean democracy is absent,” Hasina told reporters at her official residence in the capital Dhaka.
The prime minister of Bangladesh, who is 76 years old, is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who established the Bangla-speaking country that was once known as East Pakistan until it was renamed in 1971.

Rahman was killed in an army coup in 1975, along with the majority of his family. Because Hasina was outside the nation on that fateful August 15th, she was able to survive.
It was in 1996 that Hasina took over as prime minister. She will have served five terms in total.

Over her 15 years in office, she has been praised internationally for providing refuge to Rohingya Muslims who are fleeing persecution in neighbouring Myanmar, and she has been credited with turning around the economy and the sizable garments industry.

According to preliminary results declared by the Election Commission, the ruling Awami League party secured 222 seats out of 298. Reuters reported this information. In her home constituency of Gopalganj, approximately 165 km (100 miles) south of Dhaka, Sheikh Hasina received 249,962 votes, while the closest competitor received only 469 votes.
