PM Narendra Modi urged BRICS nations to collectively adopt a responsible and inclusive approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI), emphasising the need to balance innovation with strong governance.
He made these remarks during the Outreach Session on Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and AI at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
“We in India believe in AI as a tool to enhance human values and capabilities,” PM Modi said.
He reiterated India’s guiding principle of ‘AI for All’, which he said is actively being applied across various sectors.
PM Modi called for the creation of an ethically guided AI framework within the BRICS group to ensure inclusive benefits for all member countries.
According to Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of AI governance that protects innovation while ensuring safeguards.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, also present at the session, warned against the monopolisation of AI.
“AI must not become a club of the few,” he stated.
Guterres urged the international community to ensure that developing nations have a strong voice in shaping global AI regulations.
He also linked AI governance to broader global imbalances, saying, “We cannot govern AI effectively — and fairly — without confronting deeper, structural imbalances in our global system.”
Guterres called for reforms in key global institutions, including the UN Security Council and international financial bodies, to reflect today’s multipolar world.
PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to a multipolar global order and stressed BRICS’ role in shaping it. “Diversity and multipolarity are valued strengths of BRICS,” he said, according to Secretary Ravi.
He proposed several initiatives, including the creation of a science and research repository within BRICS, led by Global South countries, to enhance the resilience of critical mineral supply chains.
Prime Minister Modi also urged member nations to collaborate on responsible AI development.
India will assume the BRICS chairmanship in 2026. PM Modi announced that India will host the ‘AI Impact Summit’ and invited BRICS nations to actively participate. The summit aims to further global discussions on ethical, inclusive, and equitable applications of AI.
The session reinforced BRICS’ potential to shape international digital governance and address pressing global challenges through cooperation and reform.
