PM Modi Announces Affordable Healthcare Partnership With Ghana Through Jan Aushadhi Kendras

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India plans to provide ‘affordable healthcare and reliable care’ to the people of Ghana through the Jan Aushadhi Kendras scheme.

Speaking at a joint press conference with President John Dramani Mahama on July 3, PM Modi highlighted the importance of accessible healthcare as part of the growing India-Ghana partnership.

The two leaders discussed enhancing collaboration in vaccine production, a key area of mutual interest.

PM Modi emphasised that vaccine cooperation would strengthen health security in both countries and contribute to wider regional wellbeing.

Strengthening bilateral ties

PM Modi described his talks with President Mahama as ‘extremely fruitful’ and announced the elevation of India-Ghana relations to a Comprehensive Partnership.

This new status is expected to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, economic linkages, FinTech, skill development, and healthcare.

Beyond healthcare, both leaders expressed optimism about collaboration in critical minerals, defence, maritime security, and energy.

Prime Minister Modi also stressed the importance of enhancing cultural ties, which form the foundation of the historic relationship between India and Ghana.

PMModi thanked Ghana for its cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts and announced plans to strengthen mutual cooperation in this area.

Both nations also expressed shared perspectives on United Nations reforms, further aligning their diplomatic agendas.

Defence & security cooperation

Highlighting the mantra ‘Security through Solidarity’, PM Modi said that India and Ghana would enhance cooperation in armed forces training, maritime security, defence supply, and cybersecurity, reinforcing strategic ties between the two countries.

India has agreed to double ITEC and ICCR scholarships for Ghanaian students.

Plans are underway to establish a Skill Development Centre aimed at empowering Ghana’s youth with vocational education.

PM Modi also welcomed collaboration in Ghana’s ‘Feed Ghana’ agricultural initiative.

PM Modi described India as not only a partner but a ‘co-traveller’ in Ghana’s nation-building journey.

He reaffirmed that the partnership rests on shared values, democratic ideals, and a common vision for an inclusive and sustainable future.

Warm reception in Ghana

Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome, PM Modi noted the honour of being personally received by President Mahama at the airport.

He emphasised the deep, time-tested ties between the two nations.

PM Modi and Mahama held extensive discussions at Ghana’s iconic Jubilee House.

They explored ways to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, digital technology, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, mining, infrastructure, and people-to-people connections.

In recognition of his ‘steadfast efforts in strengthening the voice of the Global South’, President Mahama conferred upon PM Modi the ‘Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’, the country’s highest national honour.

PM Modi dedicated this award to the 1.4 billion people of India and the enduring India-Ghana relationship.

This historic visit marks the first Prime Ministerial visit from India to Ghana in three decades and sets the stage for a new chapter in bilateral cooperation.

Both countries committed to upholding democratic values, South-South solidarity, and a shared vision for sustainable development and global peace.
