‘Passports May Change, Roots Don’t’: PM Modi’s Message To Indian Diaspora In The Hague

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian community in the Netherlands for preserving its cultural roots across generations, saying India’s civilisational values continue to thrive even far from home.

Addressing a large gathering of the diaspora in The Hague during his official visit, PM Modi said the atmosphere at the venue reminded him of celebrations in India.

Opening his speech with chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’, the Prime Minister described The Hague as a symbol of friendship between India and the Netherlands.

Prime Minister Modi said Indians living abroad may adopt new languages, lifestyles and time zones, but their connection with ‘Maa Bharati’ remains unchanged. He noted that many ancient civilisations disappeared over time, yet India’s culture continues to live strongly through its people worldwide.

Recalling his previous visits to the Netherlands, PM Modi said the journey of Indians settled there reflects resilience, heritage and progress. He also thanked the Dutch government and citizens for their support towards the Indian community, whose contribution to the country’s economy and society has been widely appreciated.

The Prime Minister highlighted how Indian traditions have survived through families, languages and community platforms such as Indian radio stations in the Netherlands, which continue to promote music and culture among younger generations.

Referring to May 16, PM Modi recalled the 2014 Lok Sabha election results that brought a majority government to power after decades. He said the continued trust of voters over the years has motivated him throughout his public life.

Speaking about India’s growth, the Prime Minister said the country is witnessing rapid transformation in sectors including startups, semiconductors, artificial intelligence and drone technology. He also highlighted initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat.

Earlier, members of the Indian community welcomed PM Modi with cultural performances featuring Lavani and Bihu dances while waving the Tricolour and chanting slogans in support of India.

During the visit, PM Modi will likely meet Their Majesties Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, besides holding talks with Prime Minister of the Netherlands Rob Jetten.
