Panama has declared a state of emergency to coordinate relief operations and support communities affected by a powerful earthquake that struck the Central American country on October 9.
Presidential Minister Juan Carlos Orillac announced the decision at a press conference at the presidential palace on Saturday.
He said the declaration would keep government agencies on standby and ensure they had the resources needed to assist affected communities.
President Jose Raul Mulino has ordered the formation of a commission to coordinate relief operations, manage resources and address residents’ needs, Orillac said, according to Xinhua news agency.
The government has also established donation collection centres, including one at Omar Park in Panama City. Provincial government offices will serve as additional collection points.
The magnitude-7.5 earthquake struck at 12:56 PM local time on Friday, with its epicentre around 39 km northwest of Tonosí in Los Santos province.
The tremors damaged homes, schools, healthcare facilities, roads and public buildings across several parts of the country.
Videos shared on social media showed the roof of the Albrook bus terminal swaying, while windows shook violently in several buildings. Tremors also rocked Panama City, where a Xinhua correspondent reported strong side-to-side jolts and a hanging light swinging intensely.
Authorities continue to assess the damage and coordinate emergency response measures.
India has expressed solidarity with Panama following the earthquake. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India stood with the country’s government and people, extending his thoughts and prayers to those injured and affected, particularly families facing loss and hardship.
Jaishankar shared the message on X on Saturday and tagged Panama’s Foreign Minister, Javier Martinez-Acha Vasquez.
