One of the strongest hurricane to hit Acapulco: Otis explained in detail

Acapulco, Mexico is the landfall point of Hurricane Otis. Large-scale devastation from the category 5 storm has resulted in flooding in populated areas. Due to the storm, homes have been completely destroyed, communication systems have been severely damaged, and powerful gusts totaling 165 miles per hour have occurred. Important towns and cities are shut off from populous areas due to landslides triggered by the storm on roadways.

The strongest hurricane…

Otis was one of the strongest hurricanes to ever hit Acapulco, and it came as very little warning to the locals. In the East Pacific, this is the first storm of category five to make landfall. It quickly grew to record levels of intensity in a 12-hour period. “This is the strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in Mexico on record, though formal records for the eastern Pacific only extend back to around 1950,” said Ryan Truchelut of commercial forecaster WeatherTiger LLC.

In the city of Acapulco, where Otis made landfall, there are almost a million residents. A popular tourist attraction, the coastal city has been severely damaged by this powerful hurricane.

Why is Hurricane Otis so ferocious?

The warm seas in the Pacific fed Otis, and scientists attribute its ferocity to global warming and climate change. “There are no hurricanes on record even close to this intensity for this part of Mexico,” informed the National Hurricane Center. Experts were caught unaware as Otis rapidly intensified into a monster.

Unlike previous storms and hurricanes, Otis made landfall in a major urban region which has caused catastrophic destruction. “The hurricane hit very hard, very hard in Guerrero in the Big Coast throughout the stretch from Tecpan to Acapulco. Communications have been completely lost,” said Mexico’s president.
