As global anticipation builds for the unveiling of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner on Friday, US President Donald Trump, long vocal about his hopes for the honour, took a swipe at former President Barack Obama, who received the award early in his first term.
Addressing journalists at the White House, President Trump said he had achieved peace in Gaza and halted ‘eight wars’, insisting his actions were motivated by humanitarian goals rather than personal recognition.
“I don’t know what they’re going to do, really, but I know this: That nobody in history has solved eight wars in a period of nine months, and I’ve stopped eight wars. So that’s never happened before, but they’ll have to do what they do. Whatever they do is fine. I know this: I didn’t do it for that. I did it because I saved a lot of lives,” President Trump remarked.
Trump also criticised Barack Obama’s 2009 Peace Prize win, claiming the honour was undeserved.
“He got a prize for doing nothing. He got elected, and they gave it to Obama for doing absolutely nothing but destroying our country. Obama was not a good President,” Trump stated.
This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has generated intense speculation, with Trump reportedly among the leading contenders.
Nations including Israel, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Thailand, Armenia, and Cambodia are believed to have nominated him. They credit the US President with helping to mediate longstanding disputes.
Meanwhile, the world watches closely as the Norwegian Nobel Committee prepares to reveal the 2025 Peace Prize laureate at 11:00 AM (0900 GMT) in Oslo on Friday.
In total, 338 nominations have been submitted for this year’s prize, comprising 244 individuals and 94 organisations from diverse fields.
The announcement will be made by Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee, at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.
The committee includes:
