Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Urges India To Build Home-Grown AI Economy

Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang has said India needs to accelerate its efforts to capitalise on the opportunities presented by Artificial Intelligence, calling the country one of the world’s foremost IT powers and encouraging its companies and startups to build a home-grown AI economy.

Huang framed the AI boom as the start of a new technology platform, one that gives India a chance to leverage its already-established IT strength.

Responding to a question from IANS, Huang recalled a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about AI roughly a decade ago, and said he was eager to see Indian companies and startups begin adopting, contributing to, and building a local AI economy around the technology.

According to Huang, AI has evolved into productive economic infrastructure.

While the United States aims to build the complete technology stack, Huang said other nations should be free to pick and choose the components that suit their own AI ambitions. He added that the US administration supports technological growth at home and hopes other G20 nations will adopt AI to develop their respective economies.

On AI governance, Huang cautioned against regulating risks that haven’t yet materialised, arguing instead for rules addressing practical, demonstrated harms rather than theoretical ones. He compared AI’s trajectory to a century of automotive safety improvements, arguing that more advanced systems tend to become safer and more useful over time.

The Nvidia Chief Executive noted that AI systems have grown notably more reliable in the past two years — hallucinating less and staying more grounded in facts — and said companies bear individual responsibility for developing the technology safely even as they compete to build more powerful systems.

Huang said he had no discussions about potential additional semiconductor tariffs with US officials at the Ministerial.
