National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing during his visit to attend the 20th Meeting of the SCO Security Council Secretaries, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Monday.
The MEA stated that both leaders reviewed recent developments in India-China relations. They highlighted the need to enhance bilateral ties and promote broader engagement, including stronger people-to-people contacts.
“NSA also emphasised the need to counter terrorism in all its forms and manifestations to maintain overall peace and stability in the region,” the ministry said.
The MEA added that both sides exchanged views on various bilateral, regional, and global matters of shared interest.
“NSA noted that he looked forward to meeting with Wang Yi in India at a mutually convenient date for the 24th round of the Special Representative (SR) Talks,” the MEA stated.
India earlier called for including a reference to the Pahalgam terror attack in one of the official documents to be presented at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, which China is chairing.
Meanwhile, Pakistan pushed for including references to the Jaffar Express hijacking and a recent bus attack by Baloch rebels in the same document.
Reports said India urged that the SCO’s final outcome statement must condemn the Pahalgam attack, where 26 tourists were brutally killed by terrorists from The Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Sources said serious talks are ongoing to include India’s proposal. They added that failing to do so may affect the credibility of the SCO proceedings.
The SCO is a permanent intergovernmental organisation established on 15 June 2001 in Shanghai. Member states include India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus.
