Nepal Flash Flood: 162 Bodies Recovered From Bhote Koshi River As Search Continues

Nepal Police recovered 162 bodies swept away by a massive flash flood in the Bhote Koshi River by Thursday morning.

Teams found the remains along riverbanks across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahu, Nawalparasi East and Nawalparasi West.

Chitwan recorded the highest number of recoveries.

The flood originated in the Tibetan region and devastated areas along the transboundary Bhote Koshi River. Hundreds of people, including foreign nationals, remain unaccounted for.

The Prime Minister’s Office said 44 Nepal Army personnel, 28 Nepal Police personnel and 13 Armed Police Force personnel deployed in affected areas remain out of contact.

Authorities reported 391 foreign tourists and 93 Nepali tourists missing. Officials confirmed that 133 Indians remain unaccounted for.

A further 60 employees working at hydropower projects in affected areas are missing.

Authorities fear the death toll could rise as rescue teams continue their search.

An avalanche blocked the Lhende tributary, triggering the devastating flood. It first struck Timure near the China border at Rasuwagadhi.

The deluge swept away much of the settlement and destroyed infrastructure downstream.

Nepal’s Department of Mines and Geology detected a 4.4-magnitude earthquake that may have triggered the avalanche.

The government intensified search, rescue, and relief operations along the river and other affected areas on Thursday.

The Nepal Army delivered food, tents and medicines to people at risk during the previous night.

Security agencies and private-sector organisations have provided substantial assistance to search and rescue teams.
