Nepal’s national carrier, Nepal Airlines, issued an apology after a network map shared online inaccurately depicted India’s Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan. The airline acknowledged the mistake, removed the post within hours, and initiated an internal review.
The airline clarified that the map contained major inaccuracies in international boundaries and did not reflect Nepal’s official position.
Officials attributed the error to the use of an incorrect Google map during content preparation, stressing that the issue was unintentional.
The image quickly gained traction online, drawing criticism from Indian users. Many expressed concern over the depiction, with some calling for a boycott and describing the issue as cartographic misrepresentation.
The airline responded promptly, taking down the post within two to three hours of publication once the issue was identified.
A spokesperson confirmed that the mistake occurred during the selection of a base map and assured that steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of historically strong ties between India and Nepal, rooted in the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship. The relationship, however, includes open borders, deep cultural connections, and significant economic cooperation.
India remains one of Nepal’s largest development partners, contributing over $100 million in the 2024–25 fiscal year. Several joint projects are currently underway across sectors.
Diplomatic engagement continues, with India proposing a visit by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to Nepal.
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah is expected to visit India following an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The schedule remains under discussion.
