Nawaz Sharif scores significant win in Lahore seat in Pakistan election

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has secured victory in the Lahore constituency. Sharif emerged triumphant over his main rival, Yasmin Rashid, by a significant margin of over 55,000 votes.

Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Nawaz Sharif, expressed confidence in her party’s ability to establish the government in Pakistan. She took to social media to highlight the challenges posed by the closure of mobile internet services, which has hindered the timely dissemination of election results.

Elections were for 336 seats

In the National Assembly of Pakistan, there are a total of 336 seats, with voting taking place on 266 of them. Members are appointed to the remaining seats. Due to the unfortunate demise of a candidate, voting could not be conducted for one seat. For a party to form the government, it needs to secure at least 133 seats. As per the Election Commission’s official data, results for 12 seats have been announced. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has emerged victorious on 5 seats, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has secured 4 seats, and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has won 3 seats.

According to reports from Pakistani media, independent candidates backed by Imran Khan’s party are currently leading on 154 seats. However, despite the ongoing vote-counting process, assertions about the overall integrity of the election are not being made.

Decision-making or managing pressure

As per reports, the atmosphere is highly charged as the Chief Election Commissioner is reportedly unaccounted for. Previously, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Raza had emphasized that all returning officers must announce results within 30 minutes, warning of potential suspension actions otherwise. Today marks the second day of vote counting in Pakistan, yet clarity remains elusive. Experts in Pakistani politics speculate that these elections are mired in suspicion and potential conspiracy.
