White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said today NATO will lay out a reform route for Ukraine so that it can eventually join the alliance, but without providing a timetable.
While announcing that President Joe Biden will meet Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, Sullivan said at the NATO conference in Vilnius that a reform path for Ukraine will be developed, but I can’t put a timetable on it.
Mr. Sullivan ruled against any immediate entrance for Western-backed Ukraine, citing the country’s ongoing fight against Russian invasion, saying it would bring NATO into a war with Russia.
At the Vilnius conference, Mr. Sullivan said there was a lot of goodwill for Ukraine’s objective, but the question is what’s the pathway?
“I think we can come to a good understanding”, he remarked.
Separate from the subject of membership, NATO countries are debating concrete interim security measures to offer Ukraine, in addition to the current influx of aid to assist Kyiv’s military in repelling the Russians.
Mr. Sullivan stated that this would be discussed during a meeting between President Biden and President Zelensky on Wednesday.
