On Sunday, a big ice chunk dropped from the sky and struck a house in the US state of Massachusetts, breaking the roof.
Homeowners Jeff Ilg and Amelia Rainville believe the ice fell from an airliner flying to Boston Logan International Airport.
The ice block, which was believed to weigh 15 to 20 pounds, luckily did not hit the couple or their two children.
Mr. ILg described it as the loudest pop, bang he has ever heard.
Mr. ILg said, “Basically, we heard an explosion. The loudest pop, bang I’ve ever heard”.
They rushed upstairs when they heard the huge explosion to check on their children, who were sound asleep despite the disturbance. They then hurried around the home, trying to figure out what had happened.
Mr. Ilg reported seeing a massive half-block of ice on the back step, as well as debris spread across the backyard and on the roof.
”I had no notion what was going on. It was difficult for me to comprehend. There was no cloud in the sky”, ILg stated.
He couldn’t notice the damage to his house because it was dark. Meanwhile, his wife dialed 911, and he discovered a hole in the roof. He dashed up to the attic to check for a hole.
He estimated that the impact on the outside was around 18 inches to two feet in diameter, but the damage on the inside was much more.
Mr. ILg and his wife collected roughly 10 pounds of ice in sacks, but there was still much more.
The incident is currently being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration.
In 2010, Vivian, South Dakota, received the largest hailstone on record in the United States, weighing slightly under 2 pounds and measuring 8 inches in diameter.
