The Middle Eastern country of Kuwait, which borders Saudi Arabia and Iraq and has had internal power battles behind closed doors, continues to be sensitive about the health of its leaders.

After Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, the late emir, passed away in 2020, Sheikh Nawaf took the oath of office. The region was gripped by intense feelings of grief over the passing of Sheikh Sabah, who was well-known for his diplomacy and ability to broker peace.

Sheikh Nawaf had previously held the positions of minister of defense and interior for Kuwait, but outside of those roles, he was not seen to be very involved in politics. He was, nevertheless, generally a non-controversial choice for emir, though observers predicted his time as emir would be brief due to his advanced age. At eighty-three, Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber is thought to be the oldest crown prince in the world. He will eventually become the next monarch of Kuwait.

Kuwait has the sixth-largest known oil reserves in the world. The country, with a population of around 4.2 million, is somewhat smaller than the state of New Jersey in the United States. Since the 1991 Gulf War, which drove out Saddam Hussein’s occupying Iraqi forces, it has been a steadfast friend of the United States. About 13,500 American soldiers are stationed in Kuwait, which also houses the U.S. Army’s forward headquarters for the Middle East.
