Britain’s King Charles thanked well-wishers on Saturday following his cancer diagnosis, in his first public statement since Buckingham Palace revealed he would postpone some engagements to receive treatment.
In a statement, Charles stated, “I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days”.
The palace announced on Monday that Charles, 75, had been diagnosed with a type of cancer, less than 18 months into his reign.
“As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement”, Charles continued.
The king stated it was heartening to learn how his diagnosis had helped to shine a light on the organizations that help cancer patients in Britain and worldwide.
Charles was diagnosed with cancer after spending three nights in the hospital last month for a repair operation on a benign enlarged prostate.
Buckingham Palace has not revealed any information about his ailment other than that it was not prostate cancer but has stated that the monarch is wholly positive and hopes to return to public duty as soon as possible.
On Thursday, Charles’ wife, Queen Camilla, stated that Charles was doing extremely well.
With the king in treatment and Prince William’s wife Kate recovering from abdominal surgery, the onus is on the remaining royals, particularly William and Camilla, who are expected to serve as the monarchy’s public face.
