US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on January 20, the White House confirmed. Andrew Bates, the White House’s senior deputy press secretary, announced the decision, emphasizing Biden’s commitment to upholding democratic values.
“The President promised that he would attend the inauguration of whoever won the election,” Bates stated. “He and the First Lady are going to honor that promise and attend the inauguration. This demonstrates their commitment to democratic principles and the will of the people.”
President Biden views his attendance as a critical symbol of the nation’s democratic strength and continuity. Earlier this month, Biden reiterated his dedication to a smooth transfer of power, welcoming President-elect Trump back to the White House.
“We’re looking forward to ensuring a seamless transition,” Biden said during the meeting. “We will do everything to accommodate your team’s needs and make the process as smooth as it can get.” He concluded the exchange with a warm, “Welcome back.”
Trump’s attendance at Biden’s inauguration in 2021 was notably absent, breaking a tradition observed for over 150 years. The decision followed the January 6 attack on the US Capitol and was widely discuss as a historic departure from standard protocol. At the time, the outgoing administration was represented by then Vice President Mike Pence.
The Bidens’ decision to attend Trump’s inauguration underscores a commitment to restoring bipartisan respect for the peaceful transfer of power, regardless of political differences. As the January 20 ceremony approaches, all eyes will be on Washington to witness the resumption of traditions that embody the resilience of American democracy.
