Japan To Release More Oil Reserves From 1 May Over Strait Of Hormuz Concerns

The Japanese government has decided to release additional crude oil reserves from 1 May as concerns continue over supply disruptions linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, according to local media reports on Friday.

The move follows an earlier release of roughly 50 days’ worth of reserves aimed at stabilising domestic energy supply after the escalation of conflict in West Asia. The fresh tranche will likely cover about 20 days of consumption.

Data from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry indicates that the latest release will amount to approximately 5.8 million kilolitres, valued at around 540 billion yen (about USD 3.4 billion).

The Strait of Hormuz remains a key concern for global energy markets, as nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through the route.

Japan, which depends on West Asia for more than 90 per cent of its crude imports, is particularly vulnerable to any disruption in the corridor.

In a related development, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently held a phone conversation with Mohammed bin Salman, expressing concern over the impact of regional tensions and calling for efforts to maintain stability and ensure safe navigation in the Strait.

Takaichi emphasised the need for de-escalation and supported continued dialogue between the United States and Iran to reach a lasting agreement.

The Japanese Prime Minister also acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s continued supply of crude oil to Japan via alternative routes and sought further cooperation to maintain steady energy flows.

Saudi Arabia, in response, assured continued support to global markets, including Japan, and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining stable supplies and maritime security in the region.
