Italy Monitors Suspected Ebola Case After Traveller Returns From Congo

Italy’s health authorities are closely monitoring a suspected Ebola case involving a patient who recently returned from Congo and is currently receiving treatment in the city of Cagliari, Sardinia.

The patient, who developed symptoms associated with the virus, has undergone testing for Ebola.

Medical experts at Rome’s Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases are analysing the samples to determine whether the infection is present.

Authorities have placed the patient in isolation as a precautionary measure while awaiting the results.

The patient is being treated in the Infectious Diseases Department of Santissima Trinita Hospital in Cagliari.

Medical teams transported test samples to Rome by air ambulance, while hospital staff implemented all required safety and protection protocols to minimise any potential risk of transmission.

Italy’s Ministry of Health said it remains in constant contact with Sardinia’s regional health authorities and specialists at the Spallanzani Institute to monitor developments and coordinate any necessary response measures closely.

The suspected case comes as concerns grow over the recent outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in Central Africa, particularly in Congo and neighbouring Uganda.

Italian authorities have stressed the need for vigilance as they monitor the suspected case and the wider Ebola outbreak in Central Africa.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has urged European leaders to strengthen border surveillance and health monitoring, while Italy plans to send infectious disease experts to Congo to support outbreak control efforts. She has also called on European Union leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, to enhance coordination on arrivals from affected regions to reduce the risk of cross-border transmission.
