Israeli Airstrike Hits Site Holding Hostage Set For Release, Claims Hamas

Hamas’s military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, has reported that an Israeli airstrike targeted a location in the Gaza Strip where an Israeli hostage, scheduled for release in the first phase of a prisoner exchange deal, was being held.

Abu Ubaida, a spokesperson for the Al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed that the strike occurred shortly after the prisoner exchange agreement was announced.

In his statement, Ubaida condemned the attack, stating that any military aggression or bombing at this stage could potentially jeopardize the release process, turning the freedom of the captives into a tragedy. No further details were provided regarding the health of the Israeli captive or the exact location of the strike.

Israeli Airstrike Continues Despite Ceasefire Agreement

Despite the ceasefire agreement reached on January 17, violence continues in Gaza. The Palestinian Civil Defense reported that Israeli attacks have killed at least 73 Palestinians since the announcement of the ceasefire agreement, including 61 in Gaza City alone. The casualties also include 20 children and 25 women, with 230 others injured.

The ceasefire agreement, which is set to take effect on January 19, paves the way for a prisoner exchange and a return to sustained calm. The deal, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, aims to halt the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The prisoner exchange is part of the ongoing efforts to establish a permanent ceasefire in the region.

The conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, has caused widespread devastation. More than 46,700 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, while over 1,200 Israelis died in a surprise attack by Hamas that took place on the same day. Since then, the two sides have been engaged in heavy fighting.

Israeli Military Strikes Continue

Despite the ceasefire announcement, Israel’s military has carried out airstrikes across the Gaza Strip, targeting around 50 sites on January 18. According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the strikes hit a militant involved in the deadly Hamas-led attack on Israeli communities in October 2023. The IDF also targeted additional Hamas and Islamic Jihad military compounds, weapons storage facilities, launch posts, and observation posts.

As the violence persists, Gaza’s health authorities reported that Israeli airstrikes have killed 81 people and injured nearly 200 others in just the past 24 hours. The situation remains dire, with civilians continuing to bear the brunt of the conflict.
