The depth of the destruction in the country on the first day of the strike was caught in satellite photographs published by the Israel Defense Forces days after Hamas attacked Israel. The IDF claimed on Monday that it is possible to see Hamas’ determination to commit war crimes from space. “The lengths Hamas is willing to go in order to commit war crimes are visible even from outer space,” they said on X, formerly Twitter while sharing the image.
Israel may be seen in the satellite image both before and after the October 7 attacks by Hamas. A sizable portion of the land is visible in the image to be covered in gray and black smoke.
On Saturday, October 7, a surprise onslaught by Hamas fighters on Israel resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Israelis, leading Israel to retaliate with ferocious airstrikes. As the crisis worsens, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to level Hamas strongholds in Gaza and reduce them to rubble. He declared, “We are at war and we will win. Not a ‘operation,’ not a ’round,’ but at war.”
On Saturday at 6:30 a.m., Hamas launched a massive rocket onslaught into southern Israel. Israel’s Iron Dome system, one of the best air defense systems in the world, was once more in action when air raid sirens pierced the morning stillness. Israel’s military shot 2,500 rockets in retaliation after the terrorists fired 5,000 rockets. According to a Reuters story, alarms could be heard as smoke billowed over Israeli neighborhoods where people were hiding behind buildings.
The terrorists broke through the security barriers using the rocket barrage as cover and targeted surrounding Israeli communities and military outposts, opening fire on residents. They were traveling in cars, boats, and motorized paragliders. Videos posted on social media showed Hamas combatants shooting at locals and bystanders in Israel border communities.
In an effort to reclaim territory Israel had captured during a brief conflict in 1967, Egyptian and Syrian forces launched an assault on Yom Kippur, 50 years and a day prior to the Hamas offensive.
Amidst this, the United Nations reports that since Israel began its air campaign against the Palestinian organization Hamas, over a million Palestinians have been forced from their homes in the northern Gaza Strip. In preparation for a ground invasion, the Israeli military has gathered armored vehicles near Gaza. In revenge for the bombings that left more than 1,400 Israelis dead and hundreds kidnapped, Israel claims it is striking back at Hamas and targeting its agents and operational hubs.
