Iraq has hanged at least eleven people accused of terrorism. Amnesty International condemned an alarming lack of transparency. Terrorism and murder are capital crimes in Iraq, and execution orders must be issued by the president.
According to the report, 11 terrorists from the Islamic State group were hanged at a prison in Nasiriyah under the supervision of a justice ministry team. The health department received the bodies of 11 executed people.
“All eleven were from Salahaddin province, and seven of their bodies had been given to their families”, the medical official noted.
In recent years, Iraqi courts have imposed hundreds of death and life sentences on those accused of belonging to a terrorist group, a crime punishable by death regardless of whether the defendant was an active fighter.
Iraq has faced criticism from rights groups for quick trials, with confessions obtained under torture.
Amnesty International criticized the latest hangings on Wednesday, citing “overly broad and vague terrorism charges”.
“13 men were executed on Monday, 11 of whom were accused of their affiliation with the Islamic State armed group”, Amnesty continued.
“The two others, arrested in 2008, were convicted of terrorism-related offenses under the Penal Code after a grossly unfair trial”, Amnesty added.
