Ebrahim Raisi, Iran’s President died after a helicopter carrying him and other officials crashed in a mountainous and forested area of the nation during poor weather.
According to the report, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian was also on board along with the governor of East Azerbaijan and the province’s main imam.
Iran was plunged into uncertainty Sunday as search and rescue teams explored a foggy mountain area after President Ebrahim Raisi’s helicopter went missing.
The tragedy occurred in Dizmar’s hilly protected forest region, near the village of Varzaghan.
Pirhossein Koolivand, Iran’s Red Crescent chief, announced early Monday that rescue personnel had spotted the helicopter and were on their way to the location.
Representing hardline and conservative forces in Iranian politics, the 63-year-old, served as president for nearly three years and appeared to be on track to run for re-election next year.
Raisi, a former chief justice, was viewed as a potential successor to Iran’s 85-year-old supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
