Iran Warns US Troops ‘At Risk’ Over Missile THAAD Defense Deployment To Israel

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi has issued a stark warning regarding the deployment of US troops to Israel. Iran stated that this move would jeopardize the safety of American personnel involved in operating the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile system.

Araghchi’s comments came in response to reports of the US sending THAAD to Israel. This system requires American troops to manage its operations. He criticized the US for providing “unprecedented levels of military aid” to Israel, citing military assistance figures that reportedly reach $17.9 billion for 2024—a record high.

“The US has been supplying Israel with record levels of arms,” Araghchi emphasized. His remarks were disseminated through Iranian state media, although the Foreign Ministry did not respond to requests for additional comments.

Tensions are heightened, as Israel is widely believed to be preparing for potential strikes against Iran following a recent missile barrage. This attack marked Iran’s second direct assault on Israel during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, which has also drawn in Iranian-backed groups from Lebanon and elsewhere.

THAAD will Intercept Missiles Coming from Iran

The THAAD system is designed to intercept incoming ballistic missiles, like those launched by Iran in its recent attacks. Araghchi also pointed out Iran’s commitment to preventing a wider regional conflict. He said, “We have no red lines when it comes to defending our people and our interests.”

The Pentagon confirmed on Friday that the THAAD batteries would be deployed to bolster Israel’s missile defense capabilities. On October 1, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) launched nearly 180 missiles at Israeli targets. Tehran framed these strikes as retaliation for recent Israeli actions against regional leaders and groups.

Moreover, in response to the Iranian missile attacks, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Iran had made a “grave mistake”. He further promised retaliation.
