As tensions escalate in West Asia, Iran has confirmed that it will allow vessels from five nations deemed ‘friendly’ – India, China, Russia, Pakistan, and Iraq – to transit the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, even as other countries face restrictions.
In an interview with Iranian state television, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi explained that Iran has not fully closed the waterway. He emphasised that countries with which Iran maintains cordial relations enjoy exemption from the restrictions, allowing their vessels to navigate safely.
“We have no reason to permit the enemy to pass through the strait. We have authorised transit for countries we consider friendly. China, Russia, India, Iraq, and Pakistan can move their vessels freely through this route,” Araghchi stated.
Araghchi further clarified that Iran will block ships linked to nations it views as adversaries, including the United States, Israel, and certain Gulf states involved in the current crisis. These restrictions underline Iran’s strategic approach to protecting the waterway amid regional instability.
Araghchi also highlighted Tehran’s enhanced control over the Strait of Hormuz, noting that the country has successfully asserted its authority in the region after decades of strategic development.
When Iran first announced a partial blockade, many observers dismissed it as a bluff.
Subsequent enforcement measures have demonstrated Iran’s capacity to control one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors and safeguard energy transit routes.
By allowing friendly nations safe passage while restricting adversaries, Iran underscores its influence over this vital waterway, which sees a significant share of the world’s oil shipments.
Analysts note that these measures reflect Tehran’s calculated approach to regional diplomacy and security, asserting control while signalling readiness to manage the strategic chokepoint amidst the ongoing conflict.
