India Sets USD 50 Billion Trade Ambition With Canada By 2030, Says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, in Johannesburg on Sunday during the G20 Summit, where the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

PM Modi highlighted India’s ambition to boost trade with Canada to USD 50 billion by 2030, noting the growing momentum since their previous engagement at the G7 Summit earlier this year.

Following the meeting, the Prime Minister took to X to describe the discussions as ‘very productive’, emphasising enhanced cooperation in key sectors and growing investor interest. He added that Canadian pension funds continue to explore opportunities in Indian markets.

Both leaders agreed to expand collaboration across defence and space, viewing these sectors as crucial pillars of the next phase of engagement. Officials present at the meeting included External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, underscoring the importance of the talks.

The renewed focus comes at a time when both countries are attempting to stabilise and rebuild relations following a period of diplomatic strain.

Trilateral Technology Partnership Launched

A day earlier, PM Modi, along with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and PM Carney, unveiled the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership.

The initiative aims to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies, support resilient supply chains, promote clean energy solutions and encourage widespread adoption of artificial intelligence.

PM Modi stated that the partnership brings together ‘democratic partners across three continents and three oceans’ to work towards a sustainable and technologically advanced future.

This latest meeting follows a series of high-level interactions in recent months. Earlier in November, EAM Jaishankar met Minister Anand at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Niagara, where both sides expressed optimism about strengthening ties under the New Roadmap 2025.

A joint statement issued after their discussions highlighted shared democratic values, respect for sovereignty and a commitment to strategic stability as central to rebuilding the partnership.

Leaders from both countries believe renewed cooperation will enhance economic resilience and mitigate risks posed by global geopolitical shifts.

PM Modi and PM Carney had also met during the G7 Summit in Kananaskis in June, paving the way for improved diplomatic engagement and the appointment of new High Commissioners in New Delhi and Ottawa.
