India Monitors Iran-Israel Conflict; Moves To Protect Over 1,500 Stranded Students

With the Middle East crisis intensifying after the Iran-Israel conflict, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday said it is closely monitoring the security situation to safeguard the welfare of Indian nationals in both countries.

In a statement on social media platform X, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that, “The Indian Embassy in Tehran is continuously monitoring the security situation and engaging Indian students in Iran to ensure their safety.”

“In some cases, students are being relocated with the Embassy’s facilitation to safer places within Iran. Other feasible options are also under examination,” the statement further added.

Embassy in constant touch with community leaders

The MEA said the Embassy is also in contact with community leaders across Iran regarding the welfare of Indian citizens. The statement came hours after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah spoke to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar about students from the Union Territory stuck in Iran.

Over 1,500 Indian students in Iran, mostly from Jammu and Kashmir, are now stranded. Their parents have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jaishankar to ensure the students’ safe return. Most of the students in Tehran, Shiraz, and Qom are pursuing MBBS and other professional courses.

Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Iran asked Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin to remain vigilant. It also shared a Google form on its X account to collect personal details from Indian citizens.

Students urged to stay connected and cautious

The embassy urged everyone ‘not to panic, exercise due caution and maintain contact with the Embassy of India in Tehran’. A Telegram link was also shared for real-time updates from the mission.

Meanwhile, Israel’s ‘Operation Rising Lion’ began on Friday with a surprise strike that killed Iran’s top military leadership and damaged its nuclear facilities. Iran retaliated with air strikes. Both sides have exchanged hundreds of missiles over the past three days.

Israel vowed to intensify the offensive, while Iran threatened to “open the gates of hell” in response.

Indian missions in both Iran and Israel have issued helpline numbers. The Indian Embassy in Israel said it remains in close touch with local authorities and continues to monitor developments.

The MEA is expected to issue further advisories as the situation develops. In the meantime, Indian students in Iran have been asked to stay alert, follow official instructions, and limit outdoor movement.

The Iran-Israel conflict has triggered global concerns and caused deep anxiety among foreign nationals, especially Indian students in Iran.
