External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar held discussions with Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramon de la Fuente, on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.
“Pleased to meet Juan Ramon de la Fuente, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico in Rio de Janeiro today. Discussed further advancement of our partnership focusing on health, digital, technology and space,” Jaishankar posted on X, sharing a photo from the meeting.
India and Mexico established diplomatic relations in 1950, making Mexico the first Latin American country to formalize ties with independent India.
In 2025, both nations mark the 75th anniversary—or diamond jubilee—of their diplomatic partnership.
The relationship has evolved significantly over the decades, with both countries cooperating in multilateral forums such as the United Nations and the G20.
India maintains its Embassy in Mexico City and has three honorary consulates in Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Cancun.
Mexico has an Embassy in New Delhi and opened a Consulate in Mumbai in 2023.
A ‘Privileged Partnership’ was established during former Mexican President Felipe Calderón’s visit to India in 2007.
That relationship has continued to grow, with both sides expressing their intention to elevate it to a ‘Strategic Partnership’.
PM Narendra Modi visited Mexico City in June 2016 and met with then-President Enrique Peña Nieto.
The leaders agreed to advance the bilateral relationship.
A planned return visit by the Mexican President in 2017 was cancelled due to a devastating earthquake in Mexico City.
EAM Jaishankar visited Mexico in September 2021, where he met then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and reiterated India’s interest in a Strategic Partnership.
Before that, the last Indian foreign minister to visit was P.V. Narasimha Rao in 1980.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard also visited India twice—in April 2022 and again in 2023 for the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting—highlighting ongoing diplomatic momentum.
