India Honors Dr BR Ambedkar’s Legacy At UN Headquarters In New York

The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations celebrated the birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar with a special event at the UN headquarters in New York, drawing participation from international leaders and dignitaries.

Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale addressed the gathering, emphasizing the global respect Dr Ambedkar commands.

He stated, “Today, the permanent mission of India in New York organized this important function. We are celebrating the birth anniversary of Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar. Not only all over India, but many countries are celebrating.”

Athawale also praised the Indian mission for its consistent efforts in promoting dialogue, inclusion, and social justice on the international stage.

Call To Recognize Dr BR Ambedkar Alongside Global Icons

At the event, Deelip Mhaske, president of the Foundation for Human Horizon, proposed that Dr Ambedkar’s legacy be elevated to the global stature of leaders like Nelson Mandela.

He expressed gratitude to the city’s mayor for their support.

Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner from the New York City Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, highlighted Dr Ambedkar’s vision.

“Dr Ambedkar was more than the principal architect of the Indian Constitution – he was a visionary thinker, a tireless reformer, and an advocate for the marginalized. His ideals go beyond borders and time, finding strong connections in the halls of the United Nations and in a city like New York – a city built by immigrants, energized by its diversity, and united by its shared belief in opportunity and inclusion,” he asserted.

Chauhan further noted, “Dr Ambedkar showed us that inclusion is not a favor but a fundamental right. He taught us to confront injustice not with silence but with solidarity. His legacy compels us to build bridges across cultures, amplify the voices of the oppressed, and challenge the systems that perpetuate inequality, wherever they may be.”

Chauhan closed his remarks by urging all present to honor Ambedkar’s vision of liberty, equality, fraternity, and dignity for all people.

Indian Ambassador Reflects On Dr BR Ambedkar’s Role In Nation Building

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, also reflected on Dr Ambedkar’s role in the freedom movement and his lasting influence as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.

In earlier comments to ANI, Athawale recalled Dr Ambedkar’s tireless work in Maharashtra and how his thoughts have earned recognition globally.

He noted that Ambedkar’s time at Columbia University – as a dedicated student often seen immersed in its library – is now memorialized with a statue on campus.

He also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for reinforcing Ambedkar’s values, including the nationwide observance of Constitution Day on 26 November, introduced under Modi’s leadership.

Deelip Mhaske, President of Foundation For Human Horizon, told ANI that efforts are underway across the United States, involving local and state-level authorities, to formally recognize 14 April as a day to celebrate equality in honor of Dr Ambedkar.

In a landmark move, New York City officially declared April 14 as ‘Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Day’ to mark his 134th birth anniversary and honor his contributions to justice and equality.
