India Flags Maritime Security Concerns At UNSC Over Strait Of Hormuz Attacks

India has voiced strong concern over recent attacks targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the need to ensure safe and uninterrupted maritime movement in the strategically important waterway.

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, India’s Deputy Permanent Representative Yojna Patel criticised the targeting of civilian shipping, describing such actions as unacceptable and dangerous for global trade.

Without directly naming any country, she referred to earlier developments involving Iran, noting India’s support for a UN resolution introduced by Bahrain that condemned attacks in the region.

The remarks come against the backdrop of rising tensions in the Gulf, where incidents involving commercial ships have increased. Some of these attacks have affected Indian-linked vessels, with casualties reported among Indian crew members.

India also highlighted the broader impact of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies and trade.

Officials underlined that any interference with navigation in the area could have serious consequences for the country’s economy and energy security.

Patel further pointed out that millions of Indian nationals reside and work in Gulf nations, making regional stability a matter of direct concern for India.

Calling for restraint, India urged all parties to prioritise dialogue and diplomatic efforts to ease tensions. It emphasised that maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East is critical given the country’s close economic and strategic ties with the region.
