“Immediate Ceasefire” in Israel-Hamas War Is Called For By Xi Jinping

At a virtual summit of fellow BRICS leaders on Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping demanded the release of civilian detainees and an early truce in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, according to official media. According to Beijing’s official news agency Xinhua, Xi stated, “All parties in the conflicts should immediately cease fire and hostilities, stop all violence and attacks targeting civilians, and release civilian detainees to avoid more loss of life and suffering.”

He made no mention whatsoever of the approximately 240 hostages that Hamas kidnapped from Israel last month or the Palestinian inmates that Israel is detaining.

Xi also demanded that Israel and Hamas hold a “international peace conference” in order to end their conflict. Speaking through an interpreter, Xi declared, “There can be no sustainable peace and security in the Middle East without a just solution to the question of Palestine.” “China calls for an early convening of an international peace conference that is more authoritative to build international consensus for peace,” he stated.

Xi went on, “work toward an early solution to the question of Palestine that is comprehensive, just, and sustainable” as the outcome of such a summit. “Since the outbreak of the latest Palestinian-Israeli conflict, China has been working actively to promote peace talks and a ceasefire,” he stated.

China “has provided humanitarian assistance to help ease the humanitarian plight in Gaza” and would do so going forward, he declared. BRICS, a group of significant developing economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is holding a virtual summit in Pretoria with the goal of coming up with a coordinated response to the Israel-Hamas crisis. Following the bloodiest massacre in Israel’s history on October 7, when Hamas gunmen killed almost 1,200 people, largely civilians, during cross-border operations, fighting has erupted in Gaza.

Israel responded by beginning a ceaseless bombing campaign and land invasion in Hamas-ruled Gaza. Over 13,300 individuals have died in the war, thousands of them youngsters, according to Hamas.

China has long supported a two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and shown sympathy for the Palestinian people. Since the fighting began last month, Beijing has been demanding a swift cease-fire.
