Houthis Set Conditions For Peace Talks With Yemeni Government

Mahdi al-Mashat, head of Yemen’s Houthi supreme political council, announced the group’s willingness to engage in peace negotiations with the Yemeni government and the Saudi-led coalition. In a televised address marking the 10th anniversary of the Houthis’ takeover of the capital, Sanaa, al-Mashat outlined key conditions for achieving peace.

“The only solution to achieve peace is through the payment of salaries for Yemenis, the reopening of airports and ports, and the release of all prisoners,” he stated. Additionally, he called for compensation for damages incurred during the conflict and the complete withdrawal of foreign powers from Yemen.

Al-Mashat cautioned against “miscalculations” and warned that any continued hostilities could exacerbate the suffering of the Yemeni people.

Yemen is struggling in a brutal conflict since 2014, when the Houthi movement captured several northern provinces, prompting the internationally recognized government to flee Sanaa. The Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to support the government, escalating the conflict that has led to widespread humanitarian crises.
