Hindu Temple Defacement In US Sparks Outrage
A Hindu temple in Newark, California, known as Swaminarayan Mandir Vasana Sanstha, was recently defaced with pro-Khalistan and anti-India slogans, raising concerns about the safety of religious institutions in the region. The Hindu-American Foundation shared images of the defacement, revealing slogans against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on several walls of the temple.
The Hindu-American Foundation expressed the view that these hateful messages were intended to traumatize visitors and instill a “fear of violence.” In response, a case has been filed with the Newark Police Department and the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. India strongly condemned the incident, emphasizing that it has sought quick action.
This incident is not isolated, as Hindu temples in North America have faced similar attacks in the past. In Canada’s Surrey, the Lakshmi Narayan Mandir was vandalized with pro-Khalistan posters, alleging India’s involvement in the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Canada accused India of complicity in Nijjar’s killing, yet evidence supporting these claims has not been provided.
India, responding to the escalating activities of Khalistan supporters, has taken measures to address separatist sentiments. In August, the U.S. arrested an Indian national for an alleged plot to murder Khalistan terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. India has consistently refuted allegations, urging countries to provide evidence for investigation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s commitment to the rule of law, stating that they are willing to investigate any information provided. The recurring incidents highlight the need for increased security and awareness to protect Hindu temples and the Indian community in North America.
