A gunman opened fire near the White House on Saturday evening, prompting a swift response from US Secret Service officers, who shot and killed the suspect after an exchange of gunfire near the executive complex in Washington.
Officials confirmed that a bystander also suffered injuries during the incident, while President Donald Trump remained safe inside the White House.
The shooting took place shortly after 6 PM near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, close to the White House grounds and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
According to the Secret Service, the suspect removed a weapon from a bag and began firing in the area.
Secret Service officers immediately engaged the attacker and returned fire, critically injuring the gunman.
Emergency teams rushed the suspect to a nearby hospital, where doctors later declared him dead.
Authorities confirmed that no Secret Service personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation.
Officials also confirmed that gunfire struck a bystander during the exchange.
While authorities did not officially disclose the person’s condition, reports indicated that the victim remained in critical condition.
Following the shooting, authorities briefly locked down parts of the White House complex while armed officers secured the area.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots as journalists and staff took shelter.
The FBI joined the investigation alongside the Secret Service, while officials sealed nearby roads and searched the area for evidence.
Authorities have not yet identified the suspect or disclosed a motive behind the attack.
