Former US President Joe Biden’s office recently announced that doctors have diagnosed him with a relatively aggressive form of prostate cancer.
The diagnosis follows new symptoms related to urinary function, prompting medical investigation.
Biden’s office stated that doctors found a prostate nodule in the 82-year-old former president.
Subsequent tests revealed prostate cancer characterised by a Gleason score of 9 (grade Group 5), indicating an aggressive tumour.
The cancer has also metastasised to his bones.
Despite the aggressive nature of the disease, the statement clarified that the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which typically allows for effective management through available treatments.
Biden and his family are currently consulting with his medical team to decide on the best course of treatment.
The announcement has elicited a wave of concern and sympathy from leaders across the political spectrum.
President Donald Trump expressed his support via a post on Truth Social, stating, “Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”
Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna also sent his wishes on social media, writing, “Praying for Joe Biden and his family to defeat the cancer he’s recently been diagnosed with. He and Jill have always been fighters, and I am confident they will meet this challenge with grit and grace.”
The announcement comes amid ongoing public discussion about Biden’s health during his time in office.
Many observers and political figures have previously raised questions about his mental acuity and fitness to serve.
Biden stepped down earlier this year, becoming the oldest US president to leave office, with President Donald Trump reclaiming the presidency.
Biden’s personal history with cancer includes the loss of his son, Beau Biden to brain cancer in 2015.
Since then, he has been a leading advocate for cancer research, spearheading a ‘moonshot’ initiative for cancer cures during his vice-presidency under Barack Obama and continuing these efforts as president.
The diagnosis marks a significant personal challenge for Biden, but the hormone-sensitive nature of his cancer offers hope for effective management.
Medical experts typically use hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or other targeted treatments to control this form of prostate cancer.
The news has drawn attention to the importance of cancer awareness and early detection, highlighting the ongoing need for research and patient support.
This update on former President Biden’s health underscores the continuing intersection of public service, personal health battles, and the enduring human spirit.
