The first liquefied natural gas shipment since the onset of the West Asia conflict on February 28 has reportedly crossed the Strait of Hormuz, indicating a potential shift in a critical global energy corridor. Ship-tracking data cited in reports confirmed the movement on Tuesday.
The LNG carrier Mubaraz, which loaded cargo from Abu Dhabi National Oil Company’s Das Island terminal in early March, was observed passing the southern coast of India.
The vessel had remained stationary within the Persian Gulf for several weeks and ceased signal transmission around March 31 before reappearing west of India.
Global markets have closely tracked activity through the Strait, a passage that carries nearly one-fifth of worldwide LNG supply.
Traffic had sharply declined over the past two months amid escalating tensions and reciprocal blockades between Iran and the United States.
Data indicated that the tanker is en route to China, with an estimated arrival date of May 15.
Earlier in April, an empty LNG vessel had exited the strait, but no confirmed loaded cargo had completed the passage until now.
Several Qatari LNG carriers had approached the route but reversed course due to persistent instability.
In a related development, the Indian merchant vessel Green Asha successfully transported 15,400 tonnes of LPG through the strait to Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai.
Geopolitical uncertainty persists, with US President Donald Trump reportedly dissatisfied with Iran’s proposal, citing concerns over its nuclear programme.
Tehran has, however, indicated a willingness to reopen the route if hostilities cease.
Energy prices remain elevated. Brent crude rose to $109.46 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate reached $97.55.
